Passerby held thief for gardai

A BRAVE passerby grabbed and held on to a thief until gardai arrived after he saw him smash a car window and take a bag of coins from the passenger seat, a court heard.

Philip Massey (39) was left with a bloody hand after he smashed the car window and grabbed the bag of money.

He was struggling with another man when gardai arrived on the scene in Dun Laoghaire.

Judge Ann Ryan ordered a probation report and adjourned sentencing to a date in June after the defendant, of Eblana Avenue in Dun Laoghaire, admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to the theft.

Garda assault case dismissed

A YOUNG garda accused of assaulting a man in an incident outside a Dublin city centre hotel has had the charge dismissed after a judge said he was at risk of not getting a fair trial.

Judge David McHugh dismissed the charge because of the failure of the prosecution to secure CCTV evidence and a proposal to change the date of the alleged offence.

Garda Daniel Sweeney, with an address in north Dublin, had denied a charge of common assault on the man outside Dicey Reilly's bar at the Russell Court Hotel on Harcourt Street on July 9, 2009.
