Nanny is accused of assault on baby

A CHILDMINDER has been accused of assaulting a 10-month-old girl.

Sandra Higgins (32) of The Beeches, Cavan was arrested yesterday and brought to Cavan District Court to appear before Judge Sean MacBride.

Det Garda Linda Harkin from Cavan Garda Station told the judge that she arrested the accused at 8.05am yesterday for the purpose of charge on the direction of the DPP.

Higgins was initially taken to Cavan Garda Station and formally charged at 9.09am.

Judge MacBride heard that she made no reply when cautioned.

Higgins has been charged with causing serious harm to the child on March 28, 2012 at the Beeches.

The judge directed that the name of the infant not be revealed to protect her identity.

Supt Jimmy Coen, of Cavan Garda Station, said the DPP had directed that the matter proceed on indictment and she could be returned for trial on a signed plea.

Judge MacBride remanded the accused on her own bail of €500 to appear before the same court again on June 27.

Strict bail conditions were also imposed by the court: that she resides at her address, signs on every Monday at Cavan Garda Station and has no contact directly or indirectly with witnesses in the case.

She must surrender any passport she has and not apply for any travel documents or leave the jurisdiction until all matters are concluded.

In the event of a change of address, Ms Higgins must give notification and gain approval from the State and the court with a minimum notice in writing of 48 hours.

Free legal aid was granted to her solicitor, Martin Cosgrove.
