Mum caught shoplifting

A MOTHER of a sick child who was caught red-handed stealing cosmetics claimed she found it very stressful rearing her son on her own.

Valerie Folan (32), of Ferrycarrig Drive in Coolock, admitted before Swords District Court to stealing cosmetics, worth over €80, from Boots, the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords on December 6 last. The property was recovered.

The court heard that Folan had 46 previous convictions, including a large number for theft.

Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy said Folan was a lone parent of a 12-year-old and lived on social welfare.

Ms D'Arcy told the court how her child suffered from cerebral palsy and had undergone an unsuccessful operation some months agoto have his hamstrings straightened. Ms D'Arcy said Folan was on her own and, while her mother helped her, she found rearing her son very stressful.

She also had a drug addiction in the past, but is stabilised on methadone.

Judge Patrick Brady fined Folan €350.
