Man waved down soldier then took jeep, court hears

A YOUNG man accused of carjacking an army sergeant's vehicle near an army camp in the Dublin mountains has been sent forward for trial.

Joseph Haide (24) is alleged to have been part of a group who stole the army sergeant's jeep after they flagged him down when their vehicle broke down at the side of the road.

Haide, of DeSelby Rise, Tallaght, appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with hijacking the army vehicle at the Military Road in Tallaght on April 17. He is also charged with allowing himself to be carried in a stolen vehicle. Haide goes forward to the next sitting of Dublin Circuit Court.

Judge James McDonnell remanded him on bail.

It was alleged the defendant and his co-accused then took the army vehicle and led gardai on a high-speed chase across north Wicklow and south county Dublin before ramming into a garda car in Tallaght.

Four gardai were injured and treated in hospital.
