Man was about to hurl drugs into prison

A YOUNG man who was about to throw cannabis into Mountjoy jail when gardai caught him has been given a three-month suspended sentence.

Michael Barrett (21) was on early release from his own prison sentence and under pressure from people he had met in jail when he committed the crime.

Judge Ann Watkin suspended the jail term at Dublin District Court after hearing it had been a small amount of cannabis, worth €10.

Barrett, of Glenties Park, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs at Royal Canal Bank, on February 5, 2013. The prosecuting garda said he was set to throw a package of cannabis when he was stopped.

The judge suspended the three-month sentence for a year on condition that the accused takes no alcohol or non-prescription drugs.
