Man stole runners and left old pair behind

A MAN who took a pair of runners from a department store left his old pair behind in their place, a court heard.

Mark Gavin (25) suffers severe anxiety after a car crash and on the day he had abused his medication.

Judge Dermot Dempsey ordered him to complete 140 hours community service in lieu of three months in jail.

Gavin, of Newtown Court in Coolock, admitted before Swords District Court to stealing a pair of Nike runners, worth €80, from TK Maxx in Swords on June 16, 2013.

Garda Dongdong Zheng said Gavin was seen by staff removing his old runners, picking up a new pair and putting his old runners back onto the shelf.

The court also heard there was blood on the ground from where Gavin cut his fingers taking off the tags.
