Man harassed his ex for three years

A YOUNG man who harassed his ex-girlfriend for nearly three years has admitted he reacted badly after they broke up as she was his first serious girlfriend.

Darren Kiely (21) promised the court he would keep away from the victim, and would have no further contact with her, either directly or indirectly.

A judge said the charge involved "serious incidents of harassment", and he sentenced Kiely to eight months in prison, suspended for three years.

Judge Patrick Brady, who read the witness statements in his private chambers, also told the garda there was no need to give evidence in public.

The defendant, of Bun Na Cnoc in Naul, admitted the charge at Swords District Court.

It took place at various locations in Balbriggan, though mostly at Home nightclub and at the victim's home, between August 2, 2007 and May 9, 2010.

The court heard Kiely, who had no previous convictions, immediately ceased all contact with the victim after she contacted the gardai. Judge Brady fined Kiely €1,500 and sentenced him to eight months in prison suspended for three years.
