A DUBLIN man is facing trial charged with seriously assaulting another man at a house in the west of the city.

John Delaney (60) was remanded on continuing bail when he appeared in Blanchardstown District Court.

Mr Delaney, with an address at Greenfort Close, Clondalkin, is charged with assault causing harm to a man.

The charge is under Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and the assault is alleged to have happened at an address at Palmerstown Woods, also in Clondalkin on April 26 this year.

The case was before the court for the directions of the DPP to be made available.

A state solicitor told Judge David McHugh that the DPP had directed trial on indictment.

This means the case will be sent forward for trial to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, which has greater potential sentencing powers on conviction than the district court.

The judge adjourned the case to a date in January, for the preparation of a book of evidence.

The judge also granted free legal aid to the accused after his lawyer said he was on disability allowance and handed a statement of his financial means in to court.

The defendant has not yet indicated how he intends to plead and no details of the alleged assault have been disclosed.

He did not address the court during the brief hearing.
