Man accused of hurling bottles in Forty Foot fight

THIS is the reveller who allegedly threw glass bottles into a drunken row in which three young men received glass wounds and knife injuries.

Paul Whelan (34) allegedly became involved in a fight between the two drunken groups of youths at a popular Dublin swimming spot.

A court heard that the incident was captured on CCTV.

Judge Bridget Reilly adjourned the matter for four weeks to allow Whelan speak to his solicitor. The accused, of Dolphin House in Rialto, appeared before Dun Laoghaire District Court charged with violent disorder at the Forty Foot, Sandycove Point in Dun Laoghaire on May 24 last year.

Two other men are currently before the courts in relation to the same incident.

Garda Charles Dempsey told the court that two groups got involved in a violent row at the Forty Foot.

Garda Dempsey alleged that both groups were drinking.

The garda said that Whelan is accused of throwing glass bottles into the drunken row.

He said three men where taken to hospital following the fight suffering from glass and knife wounds.

Garda Dempsey alleged that a knife was produced at the scene, but he said it was unclear who had produced it.

Judge Reilly said that she would accept jurisdiction of the charge.

The matter will be dealt with in the District Court.
