Jury split over rape verdict

A CENTRAL Criminal Court jury has convicted a Dublin resident of harassing his ex-girlfriend but has disagreed on two counts of rape.

Last week the jury found the man guilty of assaulting the woman and stealing two mobile phones from her.

The man had pleaded not guilty to these charges and had further pleaded not guilty to harassing the woman.

The jury returned a 10-1 majority guilty verdict on the harassment charge but disagreed on the rape charges.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy directed the prosecution to re-enter the two outstanding rape counts and remanded the man in custody.

'Yuri' tribute blasts into orbit

A US astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts have blasted into orbit on a Soyuz craft emblazoned with the portrait of the first man in space in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's historic flight.

About nine minutes into the flight to the International Space Station, officials announced that the spacecraft had successfully reached orbit.

Live footage on Nasa TV showed that a small stuffed dog hanging in front of the crew had begun to float, an indication of the weightlessness of space.

Police forget murder knife

Police in the US state of Georgia said that detectives left a bloody knife at a home where three people were stabbed to death -- a knife that a newspaper has claimed was later uncovered by a newspaper reporter.

DeKalb County Police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said detectives had found what they thought was the main weapon used in the killing, but that the knife should have been collected as evidence.

Police have charged a 21-year-old man with murder and aggravated assault.
