'I was raped and thought I'd be killed'

A MAN became "a crazed monster" before raping an Australian tourist, it has been alleged at the Central Criminal Court.

The woman, giving evidence from Australia via video link, said she thought the accused was going to kill her after he raped her. She said he told her, "you're not going anywhere, you'll tell" but that she managed to flag down a passing taxi and escape.

She denied a suggestion by defence counsel that she had made up the rape allegation because she was embarrassed about having casual sex with the accused, who is from Kerry.

"I was raped and I thought I was going to be killed," she said. "I'm changed; everything in my life has changed. He shouldn't be able to get away with it; that's why I'm here."

The 25-year-old accused has pleaded not guilty to rape and four counts of sexual assault on the woman in Co Kerry on July 8, 2009.

The woman told the prosecution that she was in Kerry on holidays. She was in a pub when the accused came up to her and started talking to her. She said she remembers drinking bourbon and may have had up to eight drinks.

When she and her friends left the pub to go back to their accommodation, the accused walked with them. When they reached the hostel, he offered to show the woman his old school and she agreed.

She said they walked for a while before they reached a green area. She said she then became scared and told the accused she wanted to go home.

She said she screamed but that he told her to shut up and "nobody can hear you, there's no one coming". She said he raped her despite her trying to kick and punch him.

The woman agreed with defence counsel that she and the accused had kissed briefly on the way to the green area.

She also agreed that she went with her friends to a tourist attraction the next day but only because she did not want to be on her own.

Mr Sammon said that she and his client had consensual sex and that she had made up the rape allegation out of "utter self-disgust and embarrassment". The woman rejected this claim

The case continues.
