Grieving widow (25) hit garda

A GRIEVING widow reacted violently when a garda tried to search her in a station cell and struck the female officer over the head.

Geraldine Ward (25) , of Shancastle Drive in Clondalkin, admitted before Tallaght District Court to charges of theft and assault.

Gardai were called to Dunnes Stores, The Square Shopping Centre shortly before 2pm on March 26 after staff detained a shoplifter.

Ward had resisted arrest and, Garda Laura Owens said, remained violent in the garda station. While she was searching her, Ward struck out, hitting her across the head.

The court heard that Ward's partner died in a road traffic accident last year and she has been struggling to cope with her grief since his death.

Judge John Coughlan jailed her for three months.
