Girl (3) injured as dad threw jug in jealous rage

A THREE-year-old girl was "extremely fortunate" not to be blinded after her face was cut when a jealous Dublin man smashed a glass jug during an attack on his wife and her new lover, a court has heard.

Prince Asamoah (47), from Holywell Woods in Swords, flew into a rage when he found his wife with her new partner at a house in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

Asamoah had challenged his wife's lover to "settle this like a man", before throwing a mop and a bucket at him.

He then fired a glass jug across a room at the house in The Grange on June 5 last year, which sent a shard of glass into his daughter's face.

At Letterkenny District Court yesterday, pictures of the scars caused to the girl were shown to Judge Paul Kelly as Asamoah pleaded guilty to one charge of assault and a second charge of criminal damage.

A medical report said the scars would heal.

Judge Paul Kelly said: "The photos are horrifying. Hopefully they have healed up.

"And luckily it doesn't appear to have damaged her eye.

"It's a very serious incident and it is extremely fortunate that his three-year-old daughter was not blinded in that eye," he added.

"The photos look particularly horrific and we can only hope she makes a full recovery."

Defence solicitor Frank Dorrian said Asamoah had acted in "an hysterical and irrational" manner on seeing his wife with a new partner.

The solicitor said his client had now "come to accept the change in his matrimonial status".

"There was clearly no intent to injure his own daughter and he is still extremely upset about it," he added.

Judge Kelly said he accepted that Asamoah, who has no previous convictions, was "driven by jealous rage" during the assault on his wife's new partner.

He sentenced the father of four to two consecutive sentences of two months imprisonment, substituted by a total of 120 hours community service.

He was also ordered to pay €130 compensation on a charge of criminal damage caused to items in the house during the incident.
