Garda was stabbed in the eye, court told

A 16-year-old has been charged with stabbing a garda in the eye with a 12-inch blade in a Halloween horror attack.

Detective Garda Liam Dolan was knifed in the face after he got out of his car to confront a group of youths in the Otomy Drive area of Clane, Co Kildare.

As he approached them a teen emerged from the group and lunged at him.

The garda sustained a stab wound under his right eye and was rushed to Naas General Hospital at 8.30pm. His injuries while serious are not thought to be life-threatening.

Although he has to undergo further treatment, Det Garda Dolan is not expected to lose the sight in his eye.

A 16-year-old was brought to a reconvened sitting of Naas District Court on Monday afternoon. The youth was accompanied by his mother.

It was alleged during the brief court hearing that a 12-inch-long knife was used during the incident.

The defendant was freed on bail and is due to appear again in court on December 1. He was also granted free legal aid.
