Dubs fan accused of headbutt at pub after final

A DUBLIN fan accused of headbutting a man outside a pub following the All Ireland football final last year is now facing trial.

Thomas Synnott (53) is also alleged to have kicked the victim several times after he fell to the ground in the roadside assault.

He is facing trial by judge and jury in the Circuit Court where the penalties are greater after a judge in the District Court refused to deal with the matter when he saw CCTV footage of the incident.

Synnott, of Castleknock Grove, Castleknock, is charged before Blanchardstown District Court with assault. The alleged incident took place outside a pub at Main Street in Castleknock on September 18 last year, the day Dublin beat Kerry in the All Ireland football final.

A court heard the DPP had directed summary disposal of the matter in the District Court and a judge previously accepted jurisdiction.

Garda Padraic Brennan told Judge Anthony Halpin that he had CCTV footage of the alleged incident in court, after Synnott disputed the circumstances surrounding the assault.

Garda Brennan said Synnott was not due before the court again until July, but he had the case relisted as the alleged victim was unavailable in July.

Defence solicitor Richard Young said Synnott was aware the case had been relisted but was not in court, as he had secured a few days work.

In relation to the assault, it is claimed that Synnott, in a Dublin jersey, came out of a pub with the victim.

The pair were having a heated discussion.

Synnott is alleged to have lunged at the victim a number of times before he headbutted him in the face.

It is alleged the victim fell to the ground and that Synnott kicked him while he was curled up.

Several men are alleged to have come out of the pub and pulled the defendant away from the victim.

Judge Halpin said he could refuse jurisdiction at any time.

He said the allegation was too serious for the District Court as from the CCTV footage it appeared that Synnott made two attempts before he headbutted the victim.

The judge adjourned the matter to a date in July for the service of the book of evidence.
