Drunk teen fell asleep on busy road

A TEENAGER caught sleeping drunk on a road late at night had to be arrested for her own safety, a court heard.

Kirsty Hughes (19) had been at a party where she had too much to drink before the gardai came across her in west Dublin.

Judge David McHugh adjourned the case at Blanchardstown District Court and told Hughes he would leave her without a criminal record if she made a charity donation.

Hughes, with an address at Ruirg An Ri Terrace, Balgaddy, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to public intoxication at Castleriada Drive, Lucan, on December 14 last.

Sgt Maria Hughes said gardai were called to the scene at 12.15am and found the accused asleep on the road. She was in a highly intoxicated state.

Hughes was arrested for her own safety and was brought to Lucan Garda Station. She had no previous convictions.

Hughes had got " very drunk" at a party, her solicitor John O'Doherty said. She was about to start employment and was anxious not to be convicted.

Judge McHugh remanded her on continuing bail to January 30 and said he would strike the case out if she made a €50 charity donation.
