Driver who flouted ban given four months' jail

A BANNED driver caught behind the wheel of a car claimed he had bought it cheaply and was hoping to sell it at a profit to buy presents for his two children.

Judge James McDonnell banned Gareth Joyce (29) from driving for seven years and sentenced him to four months in prison.

The defendant, of Cushlawn Park in Tallaght, Dublin, admitted before Tallaght District Court to driving without insurance or a driving licence.

The court heard Joyce had 40 previous convictions, including nine previous for driving without insurance. He was banned for 15 years at the time of the offence.

His lawyer said Joyce had battled a heroin addiction since he was 16 years old, and he had been clean for some time.

When both a friend and his uncle died in early 2010, he had relapsed. However, he claimed he was now clean.

Judge McDonnell said he wished Joyce well in remaining off drugs but he said the defendant had a large number of previous convictions.
