Dad took €40 in coins from shop till

A YOUNG man who leaned over a shop counter and took over €40 in coins out of a till has avoided a prison sentence.

Jordan Bailey (24) had been recently released from Mountjoy after serving a three-month sentence, and he said he was trying to sort himself out.

The court heard that Bailey has battled a heroin problem for some time, but was now stabilised on methadone.

The defendant, of Cushlawn Walk in Tallaght, admitted before Tallaght District Court to stealing €46 in coins from Health Express Pharmacy, The Square Shopping Centre on October 4 last year.

Garda Sergeant Bernard Jones said a weighing scales was also damaged during the theft when Bailey leaned over it to take the money.

Bailey further admitted to stealing cosmetics, worth over €167, from Boots, Ilac Centre, on May 6, and to public drunkenness at Belgard Square West on April 12. The court heard that Bailey has 24 previous convictions, including assault, drugs and road traffic matters.

The court heard Bailey, a father of one, recently served a three-month sentence for stealing a car.

Judge John Coughlan fined Bailey €400.
