Dad smashed f894 door at shops arcade

A FORMER heroin addict who turned to drink after giving up drugs has been given a suspended sentence for smashing the door of shopping centre.

Mark Fay (36) told gardai: "Yeah, I done it, what's it to you?" when he was cautioned for the damage at Rathfarnham Shopping Centre, south Dublin.

The father-of-three had the sentence suspended for a year after he admitted the offence.

Dublin District Court heard gardai were on patrol on Butterfield Avenue when they were called to the shopping centre at 9.30pm on March 27.

The 8ft by 2ft glass door worth €894 had been broken.

Fay, of Mourne Road, Drimnagh, was arrested and taken to Rathfarnham Garda Station, where he was charged.

He had 21 previous convictions for offences including assault causing harm and public order breaches.

Fay had "practically no recollection" of the incident, his barrister Cathal O Braoinain said. The defendant had a "difficulty with heroin" for 20 years, but now had a drink problem.

"With alcohol, he behaves in an appalling manner," Mr O Braoinain said.

Fay had two children on his own and looked after a third who was not his own.

The accused also had a "difficulty with his nose" following a severe injury in a serious assault and had a hospital appointment in preparation for an operation.
