A father-of-three who stole a car battery from outside the owner's front door has been jailed for five months.

Jason Maughan (29) also took copper piping from a shop floor in a separate incident.

Judge David McHugh imposed the sentence at Blanchardstown District Court.

Maughan, of Wellview Avenue, Mulhuddart, pleaded guilty to stealing a car battery worth €50.

That incident happened on February 20 in Coolmine Court, Clonsilla.

A garda said the victim reported that the battery was stolen from outside his front door in his garden at 11am. The accused was caught on CCTV.

Maughan also admitted stealing copper piping from the Dublin Gas Boilers unit at Blanchardstown Corporate Park, on October 2 last year.

The court heard that employees working in the office saw Maughan enter the shop floor and take the piping.

Homeless

The piping was also worth €50 and the property in both incidents was recovered, the court was told.

Maughan had been homeless and had addiction problems, his solicitor John O'Doherty said.

He was already in custody on another charge when he appeared in court.
