He was taken to Tem- ple Street Hospital where he died from head injuries the next day.

An inquest into his death was adjourned by Dublin Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane after she was advised that criminal proceedings were under way.

The driver of the van is to be arraigned and served with a book of evidence in October.

A garda spokesperson told the Herald yesterday: "A male in his 30s was arrested and charged in connection with this incident and was taken to Bray District Court on May 24."

Cian's family were present in the coroner's court as Insp Patrick Connell of Shankill Garda Station told Dr Cullinane that criminal proceedings were under way.

The child's father, Liam Marren, formally identified his body to gardai at Temple Street Children's Hospital.

A post-mortem conducted by pathologist Dr Emma Doyle gave the cause of death as cerebral trauma due to a road traffic accident.

At a previous inquest at Dublin Coroner's Court, Mr Marren and his wife Lisa were commended for their "generous donation" of their "beloved child" son's organs.

Gift

"This is a wonderful gift to those people who benefit, but it is a dreadful tragedy for you to lose your son in these circumstances," said Dr Cullinane.

Gardai appealed for witnesses after the fatal collision near the Hazelwood estate.

The van was travelling in the direction of Shankill village.

Dr Cullinane adjourned the inquest until all criminal proceedings are completed.
