A TRAINEE chef caught with a can of illegal pepper spray started carrying it after he was racially abused, a court heard.
A garda who stopped Ha Hoang's car on July 12 last year discovered the spray inside the driver's door.
The 19-year-old, whose parents are from Vietnam but who lives in Rathminton Drive, Tallaght, admitted possession of pepper spray, but said he carried it because he had been racially abused in the past.
Judge Anthony Halpin struck out the charge and ordered Hoang to donate €100 to the Little Flower Centre.
Tallaght District Court was earlier told the defendant had never been in trouble.
His solicitor added Hoang had been approached by a major city centre restaurant with a job offer that he hoped to take up at the weekends.
