Cell tussle led to garda hand injury

A YOUNG man injured a garda's thumb during a tussle in a cell after being arrested over a public order incident.

Thomas O'Connor (26) is alleged to have spat at and lashed out at the garda before seizing his thumb.

O'Connor, of Foxborough Avenue, Lucan, is charged with violent behaviour and assault causing harm to Garda David Coughlan at Clondalkin Garda Station on January 14, 2013.

He is also charged with common assault on Garda Colm Byrne in the same incident.

The accused is further charged with causing a breach of the peace at Kilmahuddrick Road, Clondalkin, on the same date.

Blanchardstown District Court heard the garda was unfit for duty for several weeks afterwards, but had since recovered and was back at work.

Judge McHugh accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case at District Court level. He adjourned it until June 13.
