A medical science student who took his mother's car out for driving practice while he was uninsured was stopped by gardai just 500 yards from his house, a court heard.

Learner driver Newton Lawani (19) had the car seized by gardai when they saw he had no insurance.

Judge David McHugh fined him €100 at Blanchardstown District Court.

Lawani, with an address at Foxborough Road, Lucan, pleaded guilty to uninsured driving.

He had previously been accused of driving his mother's car without her permission, but this charge was withdrawn by the prosecution and struck out.

The court heard the incident happened at 10.30pm on May 8 last.
