Burglar 'broke in carrying knife and hammer'

A MAN has appeared in court charged with breaking into a house in south Dublin armed with a knife and a hammer.

Thomas Stokes (29) is facing trial by judge and jury in the circuit court.

Judge Bridget Reilly adjourned the matter to a date in April for the service of the book of evidence.

The accused, of Anne Street in Newbridge, Co Kildare, appeared before Dun Laoghaire District Court charged with aggravated burglary.

The alleged incident took place at a property at Brewery Road in Blackrock on March 28, 2010.

It is alleged that Stokes was armed with a Stanley knife and an emergency hammer.

The court heard that the DPP has directed trial on indictment in the circuit court, where the penalties are potentially greater.

Defence solicitor Matthew Byrne said Stokes was not applying for bail.

Judge Reilly remanded Reilly in custody for one week.
