Brothers in 'stupid' theft of scaffolding from site

TWO brothers who stole scaffolding from a building site had hoped to sell it for scrap and help alleviate their financial problems.

John Paul Ward (30) and his brother David (26) were intercepted by gardai near the scene in Ballyboughal.

Judge Patrick Brady ordered the men to do 150 hours community service in lieu of six months in prison.

The men, of Northern Cross, Belcamp Lane in Coolock, admitted before Swords District Court to taking the scaffolding.

Garda Caroline Hyland said the men were seen loading scaffolding into a blue Hiace van. The owner of the site contacted gardai who intercepted the van, and recovered the property.

The court heard the men had no excuse.

Defence lawyer Patrick Jackson said John Paul Ward was married with four children, and previously worked as a landscaper with his brother.

Mr Jackson said David Ward was engaged and had one child and his partner was pregnant with their second child.

He said their behaviour was "stupid".
