A BANNED driver ruined a long friendship with his best friend after giving his pal's name and address to gardai when he was stopped by them just yards from his home, a court heard.
Ken McDonnell (21), of Cushlawn Park in Tallaght, said he panicked when he was stopped by gardai and gave his mate's name instead of his own in the hope he wouldn't get caught.
Apprentice mechanic McDonnell claimed he rang his friend that evening and apologised for his behaviour. A garda witness said the friend knew nothing about the incident when he called to his house the following day. A judge fined McDonnell €2,000 and banned him from driving for two years.
He admitted before Tallaght District Court to driving without insurance, driving licence or NCT certificate and giving a false name and address to gardai on July 19 last.
The court heard McDonnell was taken to Tallaght Garda Station where he later gave his real name.
The court heard that he had six previous convictions and was disqualified from driving at the time of the offence.
