€450 spare wheel was stolen from parked car

A SCRAP metal worker stole a motorist's spare wheel in an "opportunistic" theft in a hotel car park, a court heard.

Thomas Maughan (22) was put on probation for a year at Dublin District Court after he admitted taking the €450 wheel.

Maughan, with an address in Swinford, Co Mayo pleaded guilty to theft at Bewley's Hotel, Clonshaugh on June 25 last.

The prosecuting garda said the spare wheel had been in the back of a vehicle and Maughan had used a pliers to take it. He was caught on CCTV and tracked down, but the wheel was not recovered.

Maughan had eight previous convictions – two for public order breaches and the rest for motoring offences.

Judge Ann Watkin put him on a probation bond for a year on condition he pays compensation by a date in July
