Court chaos as lawyers plan walkout

THE criminal courts are to be thrown into chaos this week when lawyers go on strike for a day.

The solicitors and barristers will stage the work stoppage on Thursday as they withdraw their services over cuts to the criminal legal aid bill.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has called on them to reconsider the action, which is being undertaken by the newly formed Criminal Law Practitioners Organisation (CLPO).

Mr Shatter is surprised and disappointed by the proposed action, adding that the criminal legal aid bill has to be cut in line with spending reductions, according to his department.

However, he is hopeful the strike will be called off following further consideration by the organisation.

Criminal cases are to be hit by huge disruption when lawyers stage the strike, which will involve them walking out of the courts at 10.30am.
