Couple killed by bee swarm

Bees swarmed an elderly couple at their South Texas ranch, killing both and injuring their son.

William T. Steele (90) was spraying insecticide on a bees' nest when the bees attacked him, his 92-year-old wife, Myrtle, and son Richard (67).

Richard Steele's wife, Judy said her father-in-law was pronounced dead at the scene and her mother-in-law died in hospital yesterday.

Mrs Steele said her husband had to drive several miles to the nearest phone to get help because there was no mobile coverage at the ranch.

He required hospital treatment, but has now been released.

Drugs kingpin evades police

A POLICE swoop on Rio de Janeiro's largest slum failed to capture one of the city's most wanted drug kingpins.

Instead, after 12 hours of searching, police said they had rounded up 11 suspected foot soldiers for the drug gang Amigos dos Amigos that rules the Rocinha slum.

The team of 200 officers found about three tonnes of marijuana and confiscated nearly 60 stolen cars and 17,000 items of pirated goods, such as DVDs.

They had been looking for Antonio Lopes, known on the street as Nem.
