Gardai are investigating after a 34-year-old man and his partner were brutally attacked as they slept in their bed in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The incident took place at a converted shed at the back of a house in Kilcoole, Co Wicklow, shortly after 1am.
The target of the attack was asleep with his girlfriend when two men wearing balaclavas burst in and attacked them.
The man was beaten over the head a number of times with an iron bar while his girlfriend was also attacked.
Sources say that neither of them suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack, which happened at a property in the Druid's Brook estate.
It is understood that the man lives in Rathdrum while his girlfriend is based in Ashford, Co Wicklow.
Gardai are investigating if gangsters from nearby Bray were involved. Associates of this crew were previously involved in a major feud in Bray in which there was a number of savage attacks including an acid attack.
Some of them are also key members of an organised burglary gang.
A source told the Herald: "No arrests have yet been made in this investigation.
"This was a savage attack on a sleeping couple and gardai believe that it was organised and planned in advance."
