Actor Bill Roache – known to millions of TV fans as Coronation Street's Ken Barlow – is to be charged with two counts of rape.
The 81-year-old, who has starred in the ITV soap for over 50 years, allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl in 1967.
It is understood that Roache – the world's longest-serving soap actor – will be edited out of further episodes while investigations continue.
He collected an award from Guinness World Records in 2010 for his lengthy service in Coronation Street, having joined in 1960.
Roache is due to appear in court on May 14.
