Conmen 'posing as priests' to rob homes

FRAUDSTERS posing as priests collecting for charity have been targeting householders.

Residents in Newbridge raised the alarm after being targeted in the scam.

Local garda Sgt Seamus Rothwell of Newbridge Garda Station said he had been informed in the past week that there was "someone dressed as a priest" collecting for charity and the matter was being investigated.

The problem was raised at last week's meeting of the local Joint Policing Committee, which includes the Garda, councillors and voluntary representatives.

Local Cllr Damien Molyneaux said he had received several complaints.

Community representative Ger Murphy asked about checking permits where charity collectors are concerned.

Kildare District Supt Joe Prendergast said the gardai would be focusing on checking all such permits, especially where people were out collecting on the streets.
