SAFETY chiefs are becoming increasingly worried at the surge in road deaths this year.
A 21-year-old whose car skid off the road on his way to work became the 119th fatality of 2013 yesterday. Karl Moen was travelling alone near Smithborough, Co Monaghan, when the accident occurred around 9.45am. He was removed by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Gardai have appealed for drivers to take more care as they reported that more than one in 10 of those killed on Irish roads were not wearing a seatbelt. Eight more people have died in crashes compared to this time last year.
