Community rallies for Isabella's cancer battle

This is brave Isabella Gilroy (6), who is undergoing chemotherapy at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

Her dad is well-known community activist Ben Gilroy, who has run as a candidate in elections for Direct Democracy Ireland.

Isabella, who is going into first class this year, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which is a cancer of the white blood cell.

She was sick for a while, and at first it was believed that it was the rotavirus, which is a very common virus in children.

Nothing untoward had shown up in blood tests. However, a lumbar puncture confirmed the diagnosis of leukaemia just a month ago.

Mr Gilroy, who looks for solutions between banks and homeowners in debt, said the local community has rallied behind the family.

Hundreds attended a benefit night at Trim Castle Hotel to show their support yesterday.
