Community in shock as two teens die in car crash

The tight-knit community of Kilcullen in Co Kildare is today reeling in shock at the deaths of a teenage couple in a car crash.

Jamie Lee (19) and Claudia Govea (18) from Narraghmore, Kilcullen, Co Kildare, died when the car they were travelling in was in collision with another vehicle not far from Claudia's home.

The accident happened just before 3pm on Saturday at Brownstown, Kilcullen in weather described as "absolutely horrendous" by local Fianna Fail councillor Martin Miley Jr.

Two women in the second car, believed to be in their 30s, were taken to Naas General Hospital. "The entire community is devastated by this. It is a very difficult time.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with both families at this time," said Cllr Miley.

Friends of Claudia Govea, of Cuban descent, gathered yesterday in Cross & Passion College to remember their former classmate and her friend Jamie.

They were joined by parish priest Fr Michael Murphy, who told them it was a tragedy "almost impossible to comprehend", but that it was important that they gather together to support each other.
