PARENTS are still booking limos and bouncy castles for their children's first Holy Communion in the face of the recession.
Many firms are booked up months in advance, and stores in Dublin are reporting a brisk trade for Communion stock.
A spokesperson for Deben-hams said the department store had almost sold out of Communion goods. She added that people had been preparing earlier and earlier each year.
"We get a lot of our Communion stock as early as September, and people start buying just after Christmas," she said.
"People generally like to get in as early as possible to make sure they've got everything in time."
And while it's crucial that little ones are looking their best, there's still a high demand for making sure the day is perfect from start to finish.
A spokesperson from AKM Limos told the Herald that though the entire limo service in Dublin had seen a drop-off in most bookings, Communions continued to stay strong.
"They seem to hold their own," he said. "People are always booked up for Communions. Communions seem to be turning into weddings these days."
He also pointed out that pink limos and Hummers were usually the first choice.
"I think there's definitely more of a fuss made with girls, than with boys," he added.
Clive Restin, managing director of Bounce Crazy, agreed that business had been hectic for this time of year, and that people had been organising their Communions earlier and earlier.
"May would be our busiest time of the year, because of Communions," he said.
"We'd start taking bookings from people after Christmas."
He added that the economy hadn't seemed to adversely affect the amount that people spend on their Communions.
"We haven't seen a lack of people spending in the past few years. It's not that people want to spend money, people still want bouncy castles and they still want a big day."
He added that the price of bouncy castles had had to drop in recent years because of "cowboy firms" renting uninsured bouncy castles more cheaply.
