The family of the late Eric Garner, a black man who died after being placed in a white police officer's chokehold, reached a $5.9m (€5.3m) settlement with New York City, days before the anniversary of his death.
At the time, it sparked demos and a debate about relations between US police and minority communities.
Mr Garner (43) was stopped because police believed he was selling untaxed cigarettes. A video shows him telling the officers to leave him alone and refusing to be handcuffed.
