City growth

IRELAND is to become more European with big industries opting to locate in cities over rural sites, a leading economist has predicted.

National Irish Bank chief economist Ronnie O'Toole believes the Irish economy will resume growth next year and may enter a prolonged period of expansion.

And he said that Ireland is heading into an era of gradual but very definite urbanisation.

"As the economy does start to pick up, future growth will be based in cities," he said.

"Multinationals are overwhelmingly coming to cities rather than rural areas."
