Chopper held boat off rocks

a search and rescue helicopter used the downdraft from its rotors to stop a boat carrying seven people from being washed onto rocks at the base of a cliff in Co Clare.

The group had been diving about 500 metres from the shore near Rineen south of Lahinch when the alarm was raised at around 2pm on Saturday. The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard and the Shannon based search and rescue (SAR) helicopter located the boat as conditions were deteriorating. The Shannon helicopter located the drifting boat and hovered overhead until the Doolin rescue boat arrived to save all seven people onboard.

US plane flees Russian fighters

A US reconnaissance plane crossed into Swedish airspace last month as it sought to avoid being intercepted by Russian fighters, according to US military officials.

The episode occurred on July 18 when Russian aircraft approached an Air Force RC-135 electronic surveillance plane as it was flying in what US officials said was international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Ties between the US and Russia have plunged to their lowest level since the end of the Cold War over the crisis in Ukraine.

Thousands on run from Isis

A spokesman for Iraq's minority Yazidi community says tens of thousands of its members have fled their homes after Sunni militants from the extremist Islamic State group (Isis) captured their towns.

Jawhar Ali Begg, the spokesman, says about 40,000 Yazidis have left their homes in the northern towns of Sinjar and Zumar. He says the militants gave the Yazidis an ultimatum to convert to Islam, pay a tax or flee their homes - otherwise they would face death.
