charlie's all action princess

She may be used to playing a gangster's moll in Love/Hate, but now Charlie Murphy will tackle the role of a Scottish princess in her new period action movie, Northmen: A Viking's Saga.

Charlie (26) takes on the female lead in the film alongside True Blood star Ryan Kwanten.

The Wexford native (inset) - one of only a few women in the cast - said that she loved brandishing weapons on set.

"I play a Scottish princess captured by Vikings, and I got to play with crossbows and do lots of stunts. It was great craic," she said.

The movie was shot in South Africa and Charlie said she was blown away by the scenery.

"Being over in South Africa was an amazing experience.

"So much movie work is being done over there at the moment. It's such a beautiful landscape," she added.

The Swiss film is about a group of Viking marauders that are shipwrecked off the coast of Scotland and must trek to the safety of their Danelag stronghold with the King's mercenaries hot on their trail.

The movie is set to have its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival on September 27.
