Charity cyclists facing tough race across US

A team of cyclists from Lucan Cycling Road Club are preparing for the race of their lives, 3,000 miles non- stop across the US.

The four athletes won the right to compete in the prestigious Race Across America event after finishing first in the 2010 Race Across Ireland.

Ronan Baxter (28), Pete Vance (44), Declan Brassil (40) and Darryl Bent (44) will take part in a team relay which will see one member on their bike at all times over the course of the race.

They will head to America next week to prepare to cycle from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland in aid of children's charity Barnardo's.

Monaghan native Ronan said: "It can take anywhere between six and ten days to complete the course."

The heat will be a massive factor. We will set off on June 16, so it will be right in the middle of the American summer."
