Chaos after U-turn by driver (81)

AN elderly driver did a U-turn on a busy road then drove away without "a care in the world" -- not realising that a garda biker had swerved to avoid her and crashed into a parked vehicle.

Bridget O'Reilly Connole (81) had no idea that she had caused an accident until gardai called to her home to tell her. A judge said she would leave the retired widow without a conviction if she donated €300 to the Children's Sunshine Hospice Fund.

A garda witness expressed his concerns about Connole's driving saying the accident could have been a lot more serious. The garda biker was thrown from his motorcycle.

Connole, of Blackrock, admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to a charge of careless driving. The judge let her keep her licence.
