Cemetery sex attack on girl (16)

GARDAI are investigating claims that a 16-year-old girl was subjected to a horrific sex attack in a cemetery.

The attack is believed to have taken place in the Rath Cemetery in Tralee, Co Kerry, on Sunday at 9pm in fading light.

Gardai sealed off the cemetery yesterday as detectives investigated whether the victim was brought to the scene using a car.

The teenager also had to face a two-hour car journey to the sexual assault treatment centre in Cork, as Kerry does not possess a similar unit.

An area which included around 30 graves and a green area was sealed off as the suspected crime scene and forensic experts combed the area searching for clues which may help to identify the culprit. Gardai confirmed that they are following numerous lines of inquiry.

"We can confirm reports of a suspected sexual assault on a 16- year-old girl in Rath Cemetery at around 9pm on Sunday.

"We cannot say at this time if this is a random attack or if the alleged attacker may have been known to the victim," the spokesperson added.

An incident room has been set up at Tralee Garda Station.
