CCTV clue after dad crushed in accident

THE Health and Safety Authority is examining CCTV footage to try to establish how a dad-of-two was crushed while loading cars onto a truck.

An investigation has been launched into the death of Pat Byrne (48) from Stradbally, Co Laois, who was picking up vehicles from the Windsor car dealership in Ballybrit, Co Galway, on Thursday.

It is believed he became trapped between one of the cars he was loading and the lorry's ram at around 1pm.

Mr Byrne was collecting damaged cars for his brother Martin's car dismantling business in Killone, outside Stradbally.

A customer who was waiting outside discovered him in a semi-conscious state.

It is understood he suffered chest injuries and was taken by ambulance to University College Hospital Galway, where he later died.

There were no witnesses to the incident and the Health and Safety Authority is now looking through CCTV footage to establish exactly what happened.
