Car sales fall 36pc

CAR sales have fallen by an alarming 36pc within the year.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry said 3,242 new cars were sold in August.

Overall new car sales for the year have jumped 7pc.

Alan Nolan (right), SIMI director general said that there were positives. "We started from a very low base following 2009 sales but the year to date figure for new car sales is still reasonable when you note that we are already at 96pc of the full year total for last year."

The top-selling car in Ireland this year is the Ford Focus followed by the Volkswagen Golf and the Toyota Avensis.
