Car dealer's jail warning on tax

A CAR dealer was warned he faces jail for contempt of court over his failure to co-operate with the Revenue over a €4.75m judgment against him on unpaid taxes.

Mr Justice Peter Kelly said John Kane, also known as Alex Kane, of Granard, Co Longford, faced going to jail for "a long time" if he failed to satisfactorily answer a 31-page affidavit from the Revenue outlining what was described as "a litany of non-cooperation, evasion and deception".

Mr Kane said he was trying to get legal advice. The case was adjourned to July 28.

Poet Clifton is honoured

Dublin-born poet Harry Clifton spoke of his surprise today at being named as the new Ireland Professor of Poetry.

The 57-year-old was picked by a panel of top academics and arts figures for the role, which will see him deliver readings, workshops and university lectures.

Making the announcement at a special reception in Dublin, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the honour was well-deserved. He said: "He is a most worthy champion of our country's long poetic tradition."
