Callely quit because he faced boot from party

DISGRACED Ivor Callely (inset) only quit Fianna Fail last night because he discovered he was minutes away from being expelled.

The "devastated" senator attempted to save himself from the ultimate embarrassment of being thrown out of the party which he has publicly represented for more than a quarter of a century.

His decision to resign came after an internal Fianna Fail committee refused to give him more time to explain €2,900 in mobile phone claims made using forged invoices. A meeting of the committee continued in his absence and concluded he was guilty of "conduct unbecoming a member of Fianna Fail". A source said: "It was a case of him jumping before he was pushed. He was given his chance to explain himself and he didn't take it."
