Call for peace in Sudan row

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is calling on Sudan and newly independent South Sudan to refrain from using force.

The UN chief called on them "to exercise restraint in managing border tensions", UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

Newsweek's new boss quits

THE publisher of US magazine Newsweek and The Daily Beast website has left his post after 11 months. Ray Chelstowski came from Entertainment Weekly to oversee an effort to boost Newsweek's ad sales.

Executive editor Edward Felsenthal and managing editor Tom Weber also quit.

Warning for Malta on debt

THE Maltese government said it hopes to cut the country's deficit to 2.3pc of GDP in 2012, following an EU warning of sanctions. Malta was one of five countries warned by EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn that they risk sanctions unless they cut their deficit.
