David Douglas is a veteran criminal with close links to a number of notorious mobsters, including the Christy Kinahan cartel.

A former IRA man, Douglas was convicted in 1983 of shooting with intent to kill a garda during a robbery.

Sources say that Douglas was booted out of the republican organisation because of his involvement with drugs.

Douglas is particularly close to aviation broker John Kinsella (45) who was released from jail last year after serving a 10-year-sentence for conspiring to import drugs.

Ex-super heavyweight national boxing champ Kinsella was caged in 2009 for trying to smuggle €7m worth of drugs in though Weston Airport.

Gardai have been investigating Douglas’s association with a Finglas mob who are linked to gangland hardman David ‘SOS’ Mulvey.

Today it emerged that Douglas previously bought drugs from slain gang boss Martin ‘Marlo’ Hyland (inset).

Previously the Garda National Drugs Unit investigated the shot man’s links to senior drug baron George ‘The Penguin’ Mitchell.

In 2010, Douglas was sentenced to 10 years in prison with five suspended in connection with the seizure of €562,000 worth of cocaine in April 2008.

That bust was one of the biggest of that year and sources say it was linked to the Kinahan cartel.

“Douglas is a prolific criminal, it is no major surprise that someone tried to take him out. However, gardai had no intelligence that there was a threat on his life,” a source said today.

“Actually since his release from jail, Douglas seems to have been less involved in the drugs trade.”
